Mario and Luigi 3: Bowser's Inside Story was first shown in a video detailing the Nintendo DSi. In the video, you saw Bowser being playable, the Mario brothers inside him, and enemies that looked suspiciously like Fawful from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. As the game went through development, more and more was revealed. Bowser would be a main playable character, the Mario brothers would be playable inside of him, and Fawful would return as a villain.
The game starts out with Toads mysteriously inflating to massive sizes. They call it The Blorbs. Mario and the gang hold a meeting to find out what to do about The Blorbs, but Bowser interrupts and attacks. Mario and Luigi defeat him, and Bowser leaves. Later, he is given a mysterious mushroom that causes him to suck in everything in sight. He returns to the castle, and swallows Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Starlow, representing the Star Sprites. Thus, Mario's journey to escape begins.
Mario and Luigi 3: Bowser's Inside Story helped to promote the release of the DSi. Even though Bowser's Inside Story could be played on any DS, it's debut video was paired with the DSi's. This is the third game in the Mario and Luigi series, the first two being Superstar Saga, and Partners in Time. These three games are popular with the spriting community.
