Super Mario Galaxy is the third 3D Mario Platform designed for the Nintendo Wii. It bring in many different changes from the previous games, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, by introducing a whole new innovative system of movement. The game mostly takes place in outer space with comets and small planets. Gravity attracts Mario down to small planets that can explore and jump from. A lot of the levels have Mario jumping from planet to planet, looking around for the Power Stars he needs to power up the Comet Observatory, the central hub in this game.
There are 121 different stars, all scattered across the universe. When Mario collects 120, Rosalina will allow you to play as Mario's brother, Luigi. Playing as Luigi is almost the exact same as playing with Mario. As Luigi, you can jump higher and run faster. It's fun to play as him, but the downside to this is that Luigi slips for a bit after you stop running with him. In addition to playing as him, Luigi can be found in various levels trying to help you get stars. A group of Toads called the Toad Brigade also help you out.
This game introduces some new character, primarily Rosalina and the Lumas. Rosalina is the owner of the Comet Observatory, the central hub of this game. She acts as the Luma's mother, protecting and caring for them. The Lumas are a star-like species that also live in the Comet Observatory, and other areas in the universe. They aid you on your journey, by transforming into useful objects, and giving you powerups. The Lumas favorite food is star bits, and some will even ask you feed them a certain amount before they help you.
A sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, was announced at E3 in 2009. Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released on the Wii as well, making it the first time in Mario history 2 3D Mario platformers will come out on the same system. Not much is known about Galaxy 2 at this time. It is scheduled for release some time in 2010.
