Super Paper Mario is the third game in the Paper Mario series, and the fourth Mario RPG to ever be on a home gaming console. It was released on April 9th, 2007 in North America. It blurs the line between classic Mario platformers and the rest of the Paper Mario series. Most of the game is played in classic 2D, with you jumping from place to place and from enemy to enemy. The RPG parts come in with having HP, level ups, and items to heal you.
The game lets you choose from four different characters, each having their own unique benefits. Mario is an all around character, but he can flip into 3D mode. 3D mode allows you to explore an area in three dimensions, letting you solve puzzles and find secret items. Peach can hide under her parasol, protecting her from damage. She can also use it to float great distances. Bowser moves the slowest of all the characters, but he can shoot fire breath and even do double damage to enemies! Luigi is the last partner you get in the game. He's can use a spring jump similar to the one in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
One of the best things about Super Paper Mario is the story. Princess Peach is kidnapped at the start by the evil Count Bleck. Mario and Luigi think Bowser has kidnapped her, and attempt to stop him, but they find Count Bleck waiting for them when they confront Bowser. Count Bleck defeats Mario and sucks everybody, including Bowser's army, into a magical portal. Mario is left behind, where he is found by a Pixl named Tippi. Tippi informs Mario of what Count Bleck is trying to do, and so Mario's adventure begins. The story gets more complex from here, showing a love story between two unseen characters, Timpani and Blumiere. The end is one of the most tragic in all of Mario history, and set a new standard which future Paper Mario games should rely on.
