Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is the second game in the Paper Mario series. It has a sequel, Super Paper Mario. It takes many features from the previous game, and improves upon them. The game is played similar to the first Paper Mario, but in this one Mario can use special powers to transform himself. He can roll himself into a boat, turn sideways and walk through cracks, and become a paper airplane. He also has partners, like the first Paper Mario. None of the original partners return however. Each partner has a special ability outside of combat that can help you solve puzzles and find hidden treasures.
New in the battle system is the audience. If you perform well in battle, the audience will cheer you on. The more they cheer you, the more star energy you regain. Sometimes they will throw you helpful items and even attack enemies in battle for you! If you perform badly, however, audience members will leave and may even throw harmful objects at you. Partners now have their own HP, so they don't get knocked out in one hit now.
The story is obviously new in this game. Peach finds a secret map to a hidden location, and asks Mario to come help her find it. When Mario arrives to meet her in Rogueport, the town she was at, he finds her missing. He goes on a quest to search for her and to find out what the evil X-Nauts are planning.
