Mario Kart is a racing game for the Nintendo 64 starring 8 major Mario characters as racers. It was first released in Japan on December 14th, 1996, and later came to North America and Europe in 1997. It is the second game in the Mario Kart series, the first being Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo. It is the first fully 3D Mario Kart, and the first one to introduce 4 player.
Mario Kart 64 features four modes of gameplay. The first is Grand Prix. Grand Prix can be played with up to two characters, and has you against 6 or 7 (depending on if you're playing 2 player or not) computer controlled racers. The second mode of gameplay is time trials. Time trials are single player only, and there are no computer controlled enemies, or items. The goal of time trials is to see how fast you can beat a particular race track. The other two modes, VS. and Battle can be played with up to 4 people. VS. has you and up to 3 other people, but no computer controlled characters, racing against each other. Battle mode is a free for all where you try and use items to knock out other players. Once a player is hit with 3 items they lose. Health in battle is shown by 3 balloons attached to your kart. Each time you get hit you lose one balloon.
